This is a rough design for a mural that is designed to go somewhere on the side of a building in Brixton, South London where I live.
Read More:
It features Nelson Mandela who is something of a local hero to the community of Brixton- a large percentage of which is from an Afro Caribbean background.
Nelson Mandela visited Brixton 12 years ago in 1996 and as he is so popular here i thought a nice bright and colourful mural of him might inspire the local youth to follow in his footsteps.
And people seeing this artwork everyday might bee moved to change their lives for the better.
The quotes from Mandela on the mural say:
" We must use time wisely and forever realize that the time is always ripe to do right "
"I dream of an Africa which is in peace with itself "
" Education is the great engine of personal development. It is through education that the daughter of a peasant can become a doctor, that a son of a mineworker can become the head of the mine, that a child of farm workers can become the president of a great nation. It is what we make out of what we have, not what we are given, that separates one person from another "
" There can be no keener revelation of a society's soul than the way in which it treats its children "
I’m currently in talks with the local council convincing them this is a good idea- my first site proposal has been delayed a bit because the chosen site already had a fading 1950's "Bovril" ad painted on it which is apparently a listed/protected bit of local culture, so am currently searching for another more suitable location.
The idea of painting a full colour painting the size of a 3 storey house sounds like a fun community project and will make our local area a lot more colourful and interesting.

A public consultation is going to bee arranged to gauge public opinion about it. so far all feedback has been good and the editor of the local community newspaper Ella Cope has said she is going to print an article about it in 'Lambeth Life.'
