Nelson Mandela
Description:
This pen and ink technique uses tiny scribbles without any
hard outlines to denote shape or edges. It is similar to the technique of
stippling - using dots of ink to create shading - but instead of dots, I use
scribbles. Loose, open scribbles in the lighter areas, and tight, closely
packed scribbles to create the dark shades. Please full-resolution preview to
check out the detail.

About Stephen:
Born in Durban, South Africa (McCord Zulu Hospital), in
October, 1959, to American parents, Stephen spent most of his youth in South
Africa and Swaziland (where his parents worked). Interested in art since a
young boy, Stephen pursued drawing and painting through high school,
matriculating (graduating) from Maritzburg College, Pietermaritzburg, Kwa-Zulu
Natal, in 1978. He returned to the United States for the last time in November
that year, and enrolled at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1980,
taking a broad range of classes in many subjects, finally landing on Art
Education.
After graduating from SAIC in 1986, now with a wife and a
daughter (his first of two), Stephen became interested in the brand-new field
of computer graphics and began working for a company located in Oak Brook,
Illinois. Later he turned to teaching art in a Middle School in Wisconsin
(where he and his family moved in 1990). Unfortunately, due to budget cuts, his
position was eliminated and he turned to truck-driving in order to provide a
good income for his family.
